Very intriguing.... Dana's images are straight forward and to the punch, and I believe a contrast to the typical "hipster" pictures we see ALL THE TIME now a days. No longer just a 35mm lomo and a flash, Dana takes us with a hipster attitude, into something far more unique and powerful than the hipster pictures thrust upon us more and more today with the rise of the Urban Outfitter scene. In Dana's, "Pumpkin Head" series, we follow her and a gang of merry men and women to a cemetery, complete with torches. Comical and dark, Dana puts something new on the table. There is an individuality and playfullness in her images that lack in the hipster scene, and it's fun and inspirational to see.
If you couldn't tell, I like to see work like this every once in a while. It's nice to know that there are people out there who are making their own work, regardless of what other people think. Gives me a little boost of confidence, especially from a day like today (very hard critique this afternoon). Regardless of whatever people say, you have to know that you're making work to the best of your ability and sometimes you have to say you don't give a shit and come out and tell people, "Here's my stuff whether you like it or not. This is what I am doing. This is who I am."
Highlights of Dana's site? Check out:
"Selected Personal", "Personal", and "Pumpkin Heads" (which is a bit strange, but certainly my favorite album she has!)
Enjoy!
